We were in Crete when a local suggested that we stop in Rethimno, which was about halfway to where we were going. While not as busy as Heraklion or Chania, its back streets and alleys were just a delight. Many of the old buildings had wonderfully characterful old doors that looked like they had been used for centuries. These old doors clearly had had a grander past, but today they were padlocked and chained closed.
